I really want to tear into my brother's 340k mile never been valve lashed 94
Green MTX. I really want to see how the bearings look on that car.

That should be very interesting,sounds like a very very well taken care of SHO.When and where he lets you Bruce, please keep us informed.

I beg to differ on this line "If a bearing spins the motor is done or will need a rebuild." My 94 had a spun bearing back at 78k, I had no clue till I installed my SHOrt shifter. Even Mark N. really didn't believe that I could have spun a bearing, there was virtually no noise, no loss of power, and the car ran great, but I notticed a very very faint sound with the console out for my shifter install. Turned out one was spun, but it had done no damage to the crank that I could see, and the rod & rod cap were fine too. If caught early and/or one was running s good quality oil (Amsoil 5w-30 in my case) I think damage can be minimal if not igonred. Now 30k later, my car is still running around on a newer set of bearings, no weird noises other than a failed timing tensioner. Marlene, I have seen many SHOs will many miles less than yours with poor rod bearings. I would recommend getting them changed. For the price it costs its worth the piece of mind. A buddy of mine just changed his at 186k miles and the bearings had divots in them and were could have spun at any time. Trick: Dedicated 3K interval changes of oil Checking Dip Stick before inserting ignition key. We can discuss and do frequently on the subject of oil preference......My choice is, frankly, my choice.... Whatever others may choose, I use Valvoline 5W30 All Climate on the higher mileage 1990,,,,and Valvoline Maxlife 5W30 or 10W30 on the 1991 that has 216K.
