IMHO, that's an urban legend. They could care less (as do buyers) whether
the SHO would be quicker/faster than the Mustang (it was already
faster.....and almost quicker). They will sell you a car either way. Plus,
the demographics of the two cars are far different.

Same with Subaru today. The XT 2.5 Forester will kick the crap out of a
standard WRX, but the buyer's demographics are different.

My 2 cents worth. From Fords bean counters prospective sales sucked, did not
make money. Profit rules. They might have picked up if they made
improvements, not the cosmetic ones like they tried. More HP, bigger brakes
better clutch & trans. Make it something that would beat other cars above
it. But then it would have to be faster than the Mustang and that can't
happen.
