[Shotimes] 1993 Taurus overheating problem

Help!

I have seen other SHO owners describe the same problem I am having in
various web forums, but I haven't seen a solution yet.

My '93 Taurus just started overheating. The dashboard temp gauge never
enters the red danger zone, nor anywhere close, but the needle moves all
over the "normal" range, visibly moving back and forth as I
drive. Although the gauge never registers as too hot, the engine gets
much, much too hot -- after driving at normal city speeds for 15-20
minutes, the smell is noticeable and you can feel way too much heat coming
from the engine if you open the hood. Once, I even saw a small amount of
white smoke as I came to a stop in a parking lot.

My mechanic first told me he had located the problem and installed a new
thermostat. The new thermostat didn't change anything -- the problem is
exactly the same as before the thermostat was installed.

Has anyone had this problem, or can you offer any suggestions?

Thanks so much!!
Aaron
