Are you sure the system is topped off with coolant? If there are air pockets in the
engine, as they move around per the waterpump, sometimes the sensor will be cooled,
and sometimes it will get hot. This will show up as a rapidly moving temp gauge.
My wagon does that whenever it is a bit low in water. It has had several leaks in
various places, and when it is a little bit low, the gauge will zoom up to hot, then
come back down to normal, then go up again. That to me is a sure sign that I
1...need to check the level, and 2....need to find the leak.
