[Shotimes] Well, It's Official.....I've Killed My Speedo Driven Gear (or both of them)

Hey all...

I went out just now to troubleshoot my speedo.....why won't it work. It turns out
that the cables had been binding during one particular installation episode in the
recent past....a couple of weeks ago. I disconnected the two at the EGR valve just
now, and put a loose core in the lower section, and ran the car in place, with a
drive wheel jacked up. There is vibration when I try to turn the core backwards
with my fingers, and it will roll around a couple of times when I turn it forward,
but it won't go by itself. The speed sensor works, and the cruise works, or at
least it did before I just tried this test 5 minutes ago. I can understand why this
is.....the sensor has no inerta, but the cable has a bunch.

I see from the book that a small 7 mm bolt holds the driven gear in the tranny
housing, and it comes out relatively easily, with the tranny on a bench. How about
in the car? Is it possible to change that gear assembly with the tranny in the car?

I probably can get a gear at the dealer. But just in case, does anyone have a
usable driven gear assembly they would send me for a reasonable price....if it IS
replaceable in the car?

How about the drive gear? In the old days, they were both plastic. What is it like
in this tranny? I know it would require a teardown to change it or the shaft it is
part of. Not gonna happen.

If they both are plastic, hopefully they are both worn equally, and a new driven
gear would get me the rest of the way before it died, too.

I'm good for now without it....2800 RPM indicated is 72 mph, and 2000 RPM in any
gear is that gear times 10 mph, but I'd like to keep putting the miles on the
odometer.
