[Shotimes] My '93 SHO is stalling, mechanic says idle motor (?) is issue

My first guess would be that your old thermostat was bad just like your
mechanic suggested. I further guess that your mechanic may have installed
an incorrect t-stat. Some Internet auto parts sellers list the wrong t-stat
for SHOs. The local auto parts house that I use shows the wrong Stant brand
listing for the SHO. Possibly your mechanic's parts source also lists the
wrong item. So I am not finding fault with your mechanic as he may have
been accidentally supplied the wrong part. Your safest bet is to use the
Motorcraft #RT-1112 or Ford #E9DZ8575B.

Something else that just occurred to me, re: the temp gauge acting weird....

The other day, I was on the highway, driving at a constant 70 MPH, and the
needle kept creeping closer and closer to the danger zone. It finally
settled on the L in normal, which was the highest I'd ever seen it. It was
very cold outside (subzero wind chills), and I had the heater on the
highest fan setting. I turned the heater fan down to low -- 1 or 2 -- and
almost immediately, the needle on the temp gauge dropped down to around the
O. I then turned the heater back on high, and the needle crept up again,
although not as fast or as far as the first time. Don't know what this
could mean, but I was thinking it might mean something to someone....
