[Shotimes] ABS

I just got the ABS working again in my 91.  It was out for a while because
the right-front sensor cable got loose and was worn through by rubbing
against the serpentine belt.

I'm noticing that in the last two seconds before I come to a stop, the ABS
seems to be coming on, braking force suddenly comes up, and the pedal is
pushed up toward me.  It's happening pretty consistently, even in gentle
stops on dry pavement.  I suspect that there may be a little air in the
lines; would that cause the ABS to kick in like this?

When I got home a moment ago, the ABS light came on for a few seconds, then
went out.  Is there any way to read ABS codes at home?
