Had repaired the antenna on my son's 95 about 6 months ago and just
recently it broke again. I attribute the problem to the fact I didn't
take the time to open up the cable assembly inside the quarterpanel to
retrieve the broken piece left over from the initial failure. You may be
tricked by the length of cable left over when you remove the old mast, but
if the antenna fails to fully retract and there is no other visible
problem, it's most likely the plastic cable inside the mast has snapped.
When I opened up the casing, I found two 8 inch segments inside. Cleaned
everything back up, reassembled and everything is good again. A good
write-up is on SHOTIMES website and was provided by Brian Peters (is he
still around?).
The other type of repair that would not require opening up the power
antenna casing is if you bent the mast by accident say by entering the
garage before the door has fully opened. This will usually not cause the
plastic geared cable to snap, so you can remove the broken antenna without
leaving any residual pieces in the motor assembly.
If you find a parts wholesaler, the replacement mast cost I found locally
was $36. AZ has one listed on their website for $40.
