This isn't true anymore. Some western states had an
unwritten motto that 100 or less during the day in light or
no traffic was OK, but I think Montana was the last state
that would do that. The US government put a stop to that,
and now they have a regular speed limit. The police still
might give you a pass, but magazine testers that went to
that "last free" state, said that they got pulled over
regularly and cited for above 100. At night, the limit
drops quite a bit and was not open for many many years.
The highest posted speed limit in the US is now 75.
