Electronic check presentment is getting closer, although it should have been
done by now. Unfortunately, paper checks don't work like credit cards where
you can authorize and freeze an amount on the account. Yes, being able to
verify the account and routing number would be nice, but even if they are
good and the $$$ are in the account, under the current system it doesn't
matter until the paper check is presented to the bank for payment.
IMHO, it's one of the reasons that Paypal has done so well. Short of doing
credit card transactions, it would be a pain to wait 5-10 business days to
see if checks have cleared.
And the way things have become, I would not trust a cashiers or a certified
check, either, much less a money order!!

These scammers almost always use what the call a "bank
Certified Check" that is usually good, but in this case it
is bogus.
Sure seems like in today's society, that the banks should be
able to read the band and account numbers and get a handle
on if the check is good without waiting for it to make the
two week (or more) long trip through the system.
That is why for years, I took and gave nothing but cash when
buying from individuals or selling to them.
