The newspaper reminded me that Keeshan  was the original 
Clarabelle the clown? on the Howdy Dudey (sp?) show.  But 
Bob eventually became unhappy with the "attitude" that the 
clown had to show and created the Captain character to be a 
gentler/kinder person/show.  I think he was in his early 
30's in 1955 or 56 when the show started.  His makeup made 
him seem much older as you mention, thus years later, as he 
aged, he really grew "into" the part!  That is why he seemed 
to never age or change very much.

A picture of him taken just a couple of years ago shows him 
very much as he was in the 50's.
