Loud is not the problem, the gun produces a short-duration bursty sound.
Noise cancellation technology is most effective at minimizing a constant
droning type of sound.  The constant drone of the engine will make you
mentally and physically tired.  The sound of the gun keeps the helicopter
crew awake!!  :^)

I use a David Clark ENC headset when I fly my airplane and it works really
well compared to my other non-ENC headset.  A non-ENC headset has to squeeze
your head like a vice in order to shield your ears from unwanted noise, but
the drone of the engine can still be heard.  Even if it's very subtle, the
constant droning will still make you tired, not to mention the pain from the
tight headset.  An ENC headset cancels out the drone and doesn't grip your
head as tight.
