I'm paranoid about such things so I am always careful to never close my car
doors with the keys inside. If I have to, for instance in the situation
metioned, I will first roll the window down enough to get my arm inside if I
need to.
Another things people should keep in mind- if you buy a car and it only has
one set of keys, you should immediately get another set. I remember a long
time ago I bought a used car and it only had one key. Shortly thereafter I
managed to lock the doors with the key in the ignition. This was before
electric locks and so forth, it was ME that locked the doors. This car had
knobs on the doors that could not be activated with a coathanger. I got a
long piece of wire, worked it past the edge of the passenger side window,
hooked the key and pulled it out of the ignition, fished it out through the
gap beside the window. Immediately after I bought another key, wrapped it
in plastic, and duct-taped it to a wiring harness under the rear bumper.
