There are people who've crammed 8" subs into the stock box.  Beware that most woofers are designed to work properly with a certain volume enclosure, and you probably won't find one that matches the stock JBL box in that respect.

There are 6" models that drop right in.  When my original woofer went bye-bye I tried this and was not impressed by the results.  I ended up buying a used OEM sub from Al Fitz and have been happy ever since.

I'm not saying you can't find a compatible 6" woofer that would sound good.  I'm just saying I did not.

I think the tricky part is finding a sub with the same OHM-rating as our stock system.  Some people think that's important and some say phooey!

Is there anything saying you couldn't cram a bigger speaker into that box?
maybe by sacrificing the top part? I'm more interested in keeping the
mounting setup... I don't want to have to deal with a box and all that crap.
