[Shotimes] con't exhaust question

Here's a datapoint. My 95 MTX has the original SS exhaust offering,
Y-pipe and stainless cat back. The car was sold to me with the Ford 80mm
MAF and some custom plumbing to create an air duct to the fenderwell using
the smaller oval K&N filter, however the PO must have sold the chip since
it ain't there and the car was running on the original 55mm MAF. I can
tell you that the car does not feel anywhere near as quick as my 92, but
that is not an entirely fair comparison. Suffice it to say that I know
the 55mm MAF is a bottleneck to performance since the exhaust is not a
restriction in the system. As soon as the time comes, the MAF will be
addressed but there are other priorities to take care of on the car first.
As a separate scenario, I also had an opportunity to replace the 77mm with
the 55mm on my 3.2L 92 and the performance degradation was noticeable.
So the real conclusion I draw from all this is that you need to view the
entire breathing aparatus as a system and that's where you really get the
performance benefit, intake and exhaust being opened up together. You can
do the intake or one of the exhaust items separately, but you won't
realize the true potential of what can be attained until you do them all
together.
