Joe,
My 92 is R-12. I think it might have been the last year for it, but don't really know for sure. I can say that if you've got workable R-12 parts, don't scrap them because of the cost of R-12 refrigerant. There are plenty of inexpensive equivalents, most of which you don't need a license to purchase, that work great. I've been using this stuff:

for 3 summers now. I bought a case, and usually have to put a single can in once a year when it starts getting warm to top the system off. Hope this helps,

I'm asking for your help with an errand of mercy. Please bear with me for a
moment.
I recently picked up a 93 LX wagon for parts. (It came with some SHO parts,
including a Cincy hood. Worth the price right there.)
At my wife's behest, we are now fixing it up for my wife's sister and her
husband. They both work for low pay, and their twin boys are autistic. So
when it comes to cars they need help. My wife and I have agreed that we
will give them this wagon free and clear. We want to turn it over to them
in reliable condition in the hope that it will last them 2 or 3 years. Car
has 80K. Assorted issues, most I know how to contend with.
My sister-in-law is asthmatic and suffers allergies, so AC is important for
her. I just discovered the car does not contain an AC evaporator. The
compressor and other bits are still in place. Lord knows that the condition
of the system overall is.
I cannot afford 3 or 4 figures to have somebody else put in a new AC system.
What are my options? I see compressors on eBay all the time. Where could I
get an evaporator?
Just wondering, would a 93 be an R-12 or a R-134 system? I suppose we'd be
wise to go 134 if we're putting in a bunch of new parts?
Any AC experts on the list near Minneapolis or St. Paul?
Please don't waste time telling me to scrap the whole car. I know about
that, but for various reasons, that's not an option. Worst case, they'll
take the car without AC and it will be used mostly by my brother-in-law.
