Everyone agrees on that, I think.  The gear is officially called the 'starter
drive'.  It has a one-way slip clutch that allows it to drive the flywheel, but spin
free when the flywheel starts turning faster.  It's what wears out first, usually,
and gives the whir sound that makes you think it missed the flywheel.

The solenoid pushes the drive out towards the flywheel.....the relay switches the
current on and off that allows the solenoid to work.
