I have had success with the following........keep in mind I did this years
ago when the pad was in pretty good condition [minor shredding over battery] and
I continue to clean and touch-up each year or two.

Wash it on a flat surface with a couple gallons of a weak solution of your
favorite cleaner [ I use Simple Green], soak it and scrub gently with a large
sponge, wash both sides and while it's off clean and wax the exposed hood. Prop
it up carefully and rinse well, top to bottom, with a fine spray of water.
Allow to dry [warm, sunny day it doesn't take long]. Once dry paint the whole
thing [cover the "SHO"] with high temp paint intended for barbecue grills. Bring
back the "SHO" with a paint marker sold by Testors.

I secure the pad to the hood using shortened drywall anchors, stainless
screws and two washers, a large rubber one and a smaller stainless one.
