Don,  Most newer computers have a power management function.  Check
that in Control Panel.  If you don't see an option to on action to
perform when pressing the power button, go to the IBM technical
support website and check for any patches or drivers to enable that
function.

Usually the power button is a soft switch that can be programmed to
either shutdown or hibernate the machine.
