I would say buy the best 3-way speakers you can find to replace the
two rear speakers. Try the speakers at a place like CC or such to
see if it gives you enough bass.

The fact that your head unit has subwoofer RCA jacks only means that
that you can use these to feed an amp as the signal levels on those
connectors are pre-amp levels and won't be more than 4V. The fact
that the HU has the sub preamp output means that the receiver
probably has a built in crossover function inside which is a good
thing. Normally only the higher end HUs give you this flexibility.
So you would need to buy an amp, possibly one of those big power
capacitors, and deal with power distribution to the new amp
depending on how big you want to go, but I doubt you can do all this
for $100. Crutchfields is a good place to go for reference info.

About the sub placement, if you have a good size 400W amp or such
and can drive 10" or 12" subs, you can place one of those one or two
speaker enclosures in the trunk right behind the rear seat.
Normally the speakers face the back of the car. The low frequency
response is not directional. You just want to feel the thumping or
whatever turns you on.

I don't know about the CV, but the SHO is a great car to be able
listen to a good high-end stereo. The guy that did the stereo
upgrade in my son's 95 did a great job in parts selection, and once
I added the new 10" MTX subs, his stereo is by far the best I've
heard in any car. It makes the factory JBL stereo in my car sound
pitiful.
