Not so fast Paul, the Crusades were necessary and vital to the survival of
the West. Back when they ocurred, the Arab empire was the odds-on favorite
to become #1. They didn't shy away from ambitions of conquest.
The Crusades stopped that - cold.
I bought this book on Amazon. ($7) An easy and engaging read. Highly
recommended.
A Concise History of the Crusades

The notion that The Crusades were wrong, evil or backward is one of the
"modern myths" fostered on a lazy public that doesn't ask "why".
(Richard "The Lionheart" rules!)
