Some of the hoses need to be changed to make an R12 system work with R134. The
newer refrigerant will seep through the older hoses (even if they're brand
new....they are not R134 proof by design) and disappear over a fairly short period
of time. It is recommended by the shop that did all my conversions that the liquid
line be changed, and the larger hoses that connect the condensor to the
receiver-drier also be changed (along with the R/D).

The compressor oil for R12 is also incompatable with R134. I don't know what
happens if they mix, but I'd bet the minimum effect is at least a reduction in
lubrication ability, which might eat a compressor fairly quick.

I know it costs more to have the conversion done properly, but I only do things
once, if I have a choice....and it always seems that the a/c only breaks on the
hottest days, so if it were up to me, I'd try not to have it break at all.
