Well that is a kinda steep minimum order all right, but it seems like  
there's quite a few things it could be used for.  It does sound like fun  stuff.  
Maybe a more end-user-friendly source will turn  up.  Of course they have heat 
shrink material for RC aircraft but  this is evidently heavier duty.

i actually found that product to be interesting.  If I
didn't have to buy a minumum of 100 feet at nearly
$1/ft, I'd  consider it for my headlight and tailight
retrofits. (it's good for sealing  up the backs once
you've cut the housings apart to stuff in  different
lights)
