[Shotimes] OT - Digital video cameras

pretty much all the digital ones now come with a firewire port (miniDV,
digital8, etc). that's what you'll want/need for a digital transfer to and
from the computer. miniDV native (off the top of my head) is like 3.5
meg/sec, so anything faster than say a 7200 rpm ultra ATA is fine (serial
ata, most firewire drives, etc). if you plan to play it on any PC, and the
files are std enough to do so (not sure what most PC video programs use for
a file std, AVI?) then you'll need a hot swappable portable drive, (a
firewire drive, etc).

as for the camera itself, IMHO, Sony makes pretty good stuff (both in
broadcast stuff and trickle down consumer pieces). Typically they are
priced higher than other brands, but their stuff seems to hold up the best
over the long haul and the quality is good.

for those tech-type who like to keep score, I think the native raw file size
of the 2004 convention DVD (and linked media files) was like 140+ gig on my
computer. Amazing you can get that on a 4.7 gig disc with 95% of the
quality of the native video. MPEG-2 is a great thing!
