Hi all...
been gone for a couple of yeaes...glad to see the list is still thriving.
I have a red '94 MTX SHO with almost 180,000K on it,.
Original owner.
I love the car, ands see nothing on the market that would fit my
requirements any better.
I have had my share of niggling problems, but hey, w/a high mileage
car, that's part of the dues.
But now...I think I am faced with a transmission rebuild. Maybe
someone here can tell me otherwise.
I have maintained the car very well...synth oil, synth tranmission
oil, etc. Never raced, never left much rubber or mistreated the
transmission, just drove fast when I could get away with it.
About a month ago I noticed a hum at 65 MPH. Thought it was the
beginnings of a bad wheel bearing, but my mechanic...a good one who
has maintained the car since it went out of warranty...said no, the
wheel bearing were fine. I drove it some more, and the hum got worse,
plus a subtle shaking or vibrating. Not just at 65. either, but at
resonance points up and down the speed range.
Definitely not engine, definitely not drivetrain. Stays exactly the
same while coasting either with the clutch in or in neutral. My
mechanic thinks its a bad front diff, and says that it requires a
complete transmission rebuild to fix it.
Say it ain't so, Joe...
I mean...I'll DO it, but it's time for new snows (NYC-Maine trips
often, year 'round), the clutch prpbably only has about 10K left on
it and I have a small oil leak from under the valve casing that I
want to fix before it gets any worse.
Any ideas?
Anybody know how much that kind of work might cost?
Anybody know of a good transmission guy in the NYC area who's worked
on this model tranny before?
Thanks...
S.
