The way the "lamp out" sensing works is that a solid state module senses the voltage drop, Vlo, across an inline resistor (inline with the the headlights.)

Vlo is normally around ~0.5V. (So there's part of our "reduced" brightness problem...:)  )

When one lightbulb burns out, Vlo decreases to around ~0.25V, and it is this decrease in Vlo that is sensed by the solid state circuit and turns the LAMP OUT indicator ON.

Now, when installing the wiring harness and using the old headlight wires/sockets to control the relay in the new wiring harness, there sure is going to be a significant drop in Vlo since the relay only requires a few Watts to be activated.  So it would seem that the LAMP OUT indicator could come ON with a wiring harness.

Though, it's weird that some people do see the LAMP OUT ON and some don't. Any explanations?

I think though that it should be easy to fix by inserting a properly size resistor in serious with the inline resistor.
