Yes, it happened to my '89 when I first got it.
I solved it by drilling a tiny hole through the plastic end
just behind where it snaps on the stud, and putting in a
small cotter pin to prevent it from coming back off. You
could also use a safety wire or some sort of wire.
This has held for about 11 years.
