There is no problem with installing an external relay. Splice a wire to the trigger wire going into the CCRM for the fuel pump. This will energize the relay. Then have a normally open contact connected from a fused battery connection to the fuel pump + wire. I have heard of others doing this with success. Make sure the relay is rated for a few amps - like a fog light relay.
