[Shotimes] winter wheels rim questions

You may have made it a bit confusing, but backspacing and offset are two
different measurements that look for basically the same thing, although each
measurement alone can have it's value.
I'll give it a try!!
Basically the definition below: Backspacing is the distance from the rear of
the rim mounting surface (portion that rests against the hub). This was the
usual measurement for US wheels, and is generally in inches.
Offset is the distance from the rear of the same rim mounting surface to the
center of the rim (between the beads) Imagine a plane that goes through the
rim right through the middle. Positive offset is when the mounting surface
moves toward the outside of the car, negative offset is when this surface
moves toward to inside of the car. Obviously zero offset is when the rim
mounting surface sits right at the center of the wheel.
The easiest way to picture it is with two wheels with a zero offset. One is
16x6", the other is 16x8". Same offset, much different backspace.
The one problem with offset is that it isn't good enough by itself. A 16x6"
wheel with a 42mm offset may work fine, but make that a 16x8" wheel, and
42mm may not work, something like 35mm may be needed. This is where the
backspace measurement comes in. the 16x6" wheel may have backspace "x", but
the 16x8" wheel will have a backspace of "x" plus "y", which could then hit
the strut.
Ron Porter (probably confused it more!)

Stock offset is +42mm. But any offset between 35-45mm should work without
risk of rubbing if you stick with the same size tire and rim.
Yes, backspacing is the offset to the rim (i.e., the distance from the rim
mounting surface to the outside of the inner rim.) In other "words"
BS = RW/2 + OS + LT
where BS is the Back Spacing, RW is the Rim Width, OS is the OffSet and LT
is the Lip Thickness.
Typically LT=1/4" IIRC.
