Troy:
I have had a true dual exhaust with cross over pipe for 80K miles and about
6+ years on my 93 ATX. I still think this was the biggest power increase for
the buck. Ted B. recommended it in his great SHO power book but I would
probably NOT do it again or recommend it. I had a total custom system made
and installed for $500. This was a deal and I think now you will pay a bunch
more! The shop did about 2 dozen SHO's after Ted B. got them lined out on
what needed to be done! It was aluminized steel and not stainless steel like
the factory exhaust. It's 2 1/4" diameter with no resonator, high flow
aftermarket cats and Dyno Max mufflers with the stock tips. Several
problems/issues. How far are you going with the modifications on your SHO? I
had originally planned on going the blower route and wanted to be ready. I
never did and anything below this really does not need that kind of flow.
Other problems to consider. I have a nasty rasp because of no resonator.
It's possible to install one but things are very tight underneath with a
dual setup. It's not stainless steel so replacement becomes a problem since
nothing is now stock. Can't buy any pipes off the shelf! You better hope
your custom installer is still around and you are still in the same town
when it's repair time! Most shops won't work on a non-stock system and
depending on where you live it is now non-compliant for emissions checks. I
don't live in the rust belt so things have lasted pretty well other than the
Dyno Max mufflers. Of course the installer did not give me the warranty
cards for the mufflers so even with the lifetime warrantee I had to buy
another set before I got the warrantee. You also lose the flex pipe unless
the installer is REALLY good. This puts added strain on the pipes and I have
had to weld an additional brace to keep it from cracking. This has worked
well after I figured out the problem. I still like the power increase and
did not lose anything on the low end. I know because I have 2 identical ATX
SHO's. One stock and one modified. I have always used the stock car to
baseline and check out the modified car. The ATX has a very poor stock
Y-pipe design (much worse than the MTX!) and I would upgrade that and just
use the cat back Dyno max system. Which brings me to the last point. The SHO
is very highly developed from the factory and getting more power is
expensive and you won't find a whole lot more. If you want more
speed/performance get rid of the ATX car and get a MTX!!!
