I think the Wheelskin is a better option than swapping or dyeing the wheel.
Try Don's "baseball stitch" technique and it's a very nice appearance.

One tip:  I have large hands (wear XL gloves) and like a thicker rim on the
steering wheel.  So I wrap the factory wheel in two layers of those
el-cheapo foam covers, then put custom-size Wheelskin on top of them.  The
result is a rim about 1.2'' thick.
