[Shotimes] Broken shifter questions

Just wanted to double check what you guys thought about my shifter
issue.  When I started the old SHO up, the rear wheels were locked up
(E-brake sticking??).. anyway, I tried rocking it back and forth 1st
then reverse, etc.  I went into reverse and then tried to shift back
into 1st and noticed that there was no resistance with the shifter and
it would only move UP and BACK, but not side to side.  The car is now
permanently in reverse gear.  Does this sound like I'd need to replace
the cable shifter or is there a chance it is worse than just the shift
cable or is there a chance I can fix it without needing new parts?
Again, the shifter has no resistance and will only move directly in
the center up and back but not left and right at all no matter how
hard I yank it.  Anyone with ideas, please let me know.  I have not
had time yet to look under the car too see what came undone.
