I haven't driven an EVO (yet) and didn't get to really wring out the STi I
drove on the way back to the convention (which is on the convention DVD,
which BTW is just now shipping, most of you should have them within a week
or so) but I was totally impressed with the STi. Ignoring the
wing/scoop/styling, you can literally get a spare set of rims with track
rubber, switch pads to something aggressive for the track (4 pot brembo
fronts, 2 pot rear), maybe stick some SS lines on there, and literally be
ready to race out of the box. The car really responds well, has super
torque, nice balance, good steering feel, etc. I loved it. I'd love to
wring one out for a track day somewhere.
At limerock in Oct 03 at a time trial there was a brand new EVO and STi
(both guys came to the event together) who ran laps dead even with each
other all day. 1:06.5 stock on the stock tires. I was 1:04.9 in the 89 on
race tires. Put some race rubber on the STi and you can figure maybe 2 secs
on that (short) track. It's basically the performance of my 89 without the
cage, but with A/C, CD player, etc :) that's pretty stout out of the box.
Just got a set of josh's new big cams for the 3.2L in the 89, along with an
EH intake and BBB's. Will be putting that on the 89 before Road Atlanta in
a couple of weekends. Hopefully I'll have a motor now that will not gasp
down the straights :) Anybody catch the Petite Lemans yesterday, those P1
guys running 150 mph flat out on turn 12. Wow. 1:13 laps IIRC. Only 36
secs I need to shave off :)
