I have been blessed with some great mentors and instructors in the world
of music. I am not and never will be a pro musician, haven't picked up
my "axe" (Trumpet) in years except to play a homecoming gig with the
Marching Saluki Alumni (3 minutes of playing and an hour of trying to
get my lip back!).
I am a Stan Kenton fan first and foremost, but love some of what Maynard
Ferguson does. I have heard LOTS better trumpet players on the college
clinic circuit though. His charts rock though. Of course Wynton
Marsallis is probably the best trumpet player in the world today, but I
don't get to hear him rock in big band jazz much.
High school band directors are the front line in keeping music in the
schools. Metamora High, where the concert was last night holds a huge
garage sale each year to keep their program running. Of course the
football program is fully funded.......
If any of you on the list reading this care about the arts, and music in
particular, find a way to support it and promote it. My life would be
immeasurably less enjoyable if all I knew about music was popular radio
stuff. I taught my kids to enjoy folk, classical, jazz and even quality
country. Only thing I really detest is Opera, but I don't think I am
depriving myself of a bunch there (no flames from all you SHO/Opera fans
out there) :)
One of my trombone hero's in college was SIU instructor and pro musician
Gene Stiman. Played with most of the big orchestra's at one time or
another and wonderful to watch and listen to. I got the pleasure to
play 4th trumpet in the 2nd SIU Jazz band my freshman year at college.
Not bad for a non-music major that really didn't know his scales! My
trumpet hero's are anyone that played for Kenton, Doc Severenson,
Wynton, Al Hirt, and believe it or not, Herb Alpert, among others.
