I know you just replaced the starter, but it sounds like the power is
going through the solenoid to the starter, but the starter is somehow
locked up. The lighs are going dim as the car tries to crank, but
wont.

There is some debate as well that there are starters out there with
differnet numbers of teeth on them. I am not sure how many they are
supposed to have, and howm many others may have, but I remember
hearing about this at some point. Perhaps yoru starter has more/less
teeth and is binding up against the flywheel.

Here's a test, take the starter out of the engine and lay it on the
floor. make sure it is grounded adequately still. No try to start
it. Does the starter spin? Also if it does not you could have a
friend check for +12v across the starter cable and ground. If it has
+12v then you can forget everything up to tthe starter and work from
there. A digital multimeter is a great tool to have and use.

If there is no power there, make sure there is power at the solenoid.
just work your way back checking for power, and checking for power at
the correct states. (i.e. key start, starter gets power.)

The later SHO's had a different starter/solenoid layout. The solenoid
is right on top the starter. The 90 (iirc) has it on the fender, and
it;s easier to deal with. The problem is that means starters and
parts are harder to come by since they only made them that way for 2
years. I have not heard of too many problems so far finding the
parts, and you seem to have had no problem either.

> Hi, I just have a couple of questions regarding this article. I have a 1990 sho and I love it. I think everyone should have one. The only thing is now I have some starting problems. I had it for about a week when it began. I went to start it one day and it turned over, but I let the key go before it start. Then when I hit the key again it did nothing. I have changed the sylonoid 4 times and the battery and the starter. I even went as far as all new wires from the battery and sylonoid. Now all i get is when i turn the key everything comes on, but when i hit it to start it, nothing happenes. The lights go dim and the sylonoid clicks, but no starting. The last time I changed the sylenoid, I got the buzzing noise you had talked about in this article. I was just wondering if anyone had any suggestions on this. If you do, you can reach me at irishgentleman9@yahoo.com. Thank you.
