Well, he also wasn't from NJ, so I would doubt that he would know the "tricks" that the locals know. Bottom line, the whole situation is pretty stupid. And I thought that all of the bickering in IN about going to DST is pretty silly!

I read the article. I'm not sure where he was going
but if he had planned his route to avoid the NJTPK all
together, he probably would not have had these issues.
The gas stations (they are all Sunoco) on the TPK are
almost always overflowing and not staffed to handle
the number of customers. In his situation I would have
pulled up to an empty pump by backing up (he said that
there weren't any lines on one side?) and started
pumping my own gas. That usually gets an attendant
running over pretty quickly. If not-oh well! As it is
now, I usually open the gas lid, remove the cap, let
the attendant insert the gas nozzle (if they are
present-if not I'll do it myself) and shut off, remove
and close everything back up myself. Most attendants
thank me for doing their job.
Yeah, the full serve law can be annoying but I think
that most of us have learned to cope with it in
different ways. The writer would have a bit more of my
sympathy if he didn't come off as such a whining
crybaby.
