Soldering is for sure good but it is not necessary. I use crimp connectors or
wire nuts if I ever want to disassemble the connection.
Before crimping just dip the wires in some of that corrosion inhibiting stuff
and heat shrink. I like Kopper Koat by Thomas and Betts.
