[Shotimes] California Crackdown on Modified Cars

"One method that another car list used was effective, but smelly. On a sunny
day, they would spray ammonia on the tint, then stick sections of black
plastic garbage bags over the wet ammonia, and let it sit in the sun for a couple
of hours (with the doors open!!). Apparently the tint practically falls off
the windows after that."
Most tint is two layers, the clear cover layer and the VERY thin tint film
underneath it. The goal is to get the adhesive soft enough so you can peel
the tint off as a single layer instead of the tint film sticking to the
adhesive and not the cover layer. If the clear cover comes off by itself, the tint
film and adhesive are a royal pain to get off because the tint film will come
off only shred by shred.
During this hot summer the "bake in the sun" way works well, I'd certainly
start with a sun-baked car, but if you then use a steam wand or a heat gun
(not at top setting though) to soften up the adhesive, the job typically goes a
lot quicker. You can test heat one corner and see if you can pull it loose
even without ammonia/windex. Some people use Simple Green instead of ammonia
and they claim it does a good job too, sure doesn't stink near as much, but
to me, the heat is the main trick.
