[Shotimes] Need cable shifter help...

Hey all..

One of my former SHOs is having the dreaded cable shifter disconnect problem.  I
myself haven't had any shifter troubles, so I don't know what to do without seeing
it, especially hard since the car is 300 miles away from me.  It is an '89, and the
shifter has apparently totally disconnected from the tranny.  Seems like he says the
shifter is totally independent from anything under it....it moves around in all
directions and doesn't engage any gears.  

Is this the problem that the Chrysler clip fixes?  Where should I have my friend
start looking?  I won't be able to help him...it's an all day trip down to where he
is, and I don't have time to go.
