Good advice. You mentioned speaking to the county
clerk (or in my experience, it has been the
prosecutor). I would also phone the court long before
your trial date (or the due date of your fine) and ask
if there is an alternative that will allow you to pay
the fine early and plead guilty to a lesser offense. I
did not have luck with this method when I was speeding
in Maryland but a former police officer friend of mine
suggested it because he had heard of it in the past.
If you do this, try to get it in writing!
Try to call everyone to see if/how you can slide out
from under this. Your Insurance agent should be able
to offer some advice (mine told me to definitely fight
my ticket as my insurance would jump sky high; 2 pts
for 3 years won't cause an increase but anything more
than that in a 3 year span will cause my rates to jump
with Allstate, talk to someone in the District Court
(there will be a phone number on the back of the
ticket to call), talk to the prosecutor if possible
(before your court session begins). Be polite and
courteous, dress nicely, and show up early if it goes
to trial.
good luck
Ian
