How correct you are Ron. Rick Mears (yeah the Indy one) was a guest
instructor at one of my driving school sessions, and he summed it up quite
nicely. "There is always another half sec or so to be gained out there, if
you are willing to slide the car enough. But make sure you have enough tire
left to finish the lap or race!" Thats why those guys always seem to be able
go just a little faster while qualifying, they don't care about taking care
of the tires for a 3 lap sprint. In competitive autocrossing, the car never
stays hooked up, it's just one big slide fest. And there is a nice rhythm
when you get it right. For me the adrenaline high lasted for days.
