[Shotimes] OT kitchen counter tops

My brother & sister-in-law had granite countertops put into the new house
they just moved into last month.

My brother had Corian installed in their condo a few years back (they have
since moved).

If I were picking between the two, I would do Corian. Granite costs more
(not that Corian is cheap!), Gil has "already" stained the granite (don't
believe the "stain resistant"!!). Plus, as an article that I had read,
granite is more in the darker colors (may/may not fit your taste or dicor),
and the opinion was that granite could become as dated-looking as shag
carpeting or avocado appliances. Corian, particularly the lighter colors,
can be repaired more easily if you mess it up.

Corian is also a lot more flexible for colors and designs if you want
something special.

Actually, for the incredibly cheaper price, we did regular old Formica few
years ago (after considering Corian). If we wanted something different, we
would probably go with ceramic tile that I would install myself.

Anyway, FWIW, YMMV, etc.

The wife has decided it is time to get new kitchen counter tops. The
original formica is looking cheap and has chips etc.

We are looking at several options and I wish I had a tape of the "This
Old House" episode where they looked over several options.

If any of you have gone through this lately, what did you decide on? We
are looking at Granite, but I can't remember from all the man made stuff
and real granite, what is better in terms of:

Germs. Some surfaces will promote germ growth because they are porous.
Scratching. Some have to be sanded from time to time.
Maintenance: Some need regular treatments

Your advice would be helpful.
