Aaron, where are you? Maybe someone close by could make a road trip
and lend a hand? I know I will if you're near me.
The rod bearings are cheap. The labor (if you pay someone by the
book) is expensive. I've never had this priced, but I would guess the
book says 6 hours. $70/hour + $100 parts = $520+tax. This is just a
rough estimate. You'd be better off offering to pay a list member
who's done the job before a couple hundred $$$ and thanking them to no
end.
If you're not in the rust belt and the entire underside of your SHO
isn't corroded this job is really pretty easy. The most difficult
part for rust-belt cars is getting the exhaust (y-pipe) off.
There's a good chance there's no additional damage done. I've seen
rod bearings all torn to hell with no (or very, very little) crank
damage.
To the list: Aaron says he had NO oil, I'm guessing he checked his
dipstick. I can't remember how the dipstick on the SHO looks, but
even if the dipstick came out bone dry does that mean he had
absolutely no oil? Isn't the light supposed to come on at 2 qts. low?
Good luck Aaron. Let us know what you find out - and where you are if
you want to ask for some help!
