I'll second the recommendation of edesign subs. I bought an older model 8" sub (with a NOMEX/carbon fiber cone) USED and when it blew (probably more my fault than theirs), they replaced it for free. The amount and quality of the sound the little 8" puts out is amazing.

Honestly, I wouldn't waste a penny on the stock "subwoofer". I'm surprised
that the Pioneer was worse than the stocker, but I've never really been
impressed by any of their products. You can't expect to get much low
frequency response from such a small woofer.
I would pick up a 8 inch woofer from www.edesignaudio.com (9kv.2) or
www.reaudio.com (RE series) for less than $100, and modify the box to fit
it. I've had experience with both of these companies' products; they are
top notch. Both of these would offer much more volume and more accurate
reproduction, along with more low end extension than the stock sub. They
don't offer a 6 ohm version, but I've run 4 and 8 ohm loads on the stock
amp. With the eD, you can get a sub and amp for $200.
In my old 94 ATX, I spend a couple minutes building a sealed MDF box to
clear a rear strut tower brace and mount in the stock location using the
stock hardware. I think it had over .5 cubic ft volume after displacement,
perfect for a small sub.
