It's more than bowing.  More like a trapezoidal crossection if you were to look at it that way, if you put too wide a tire on a given rim.  Kinda like you're pinching the tire to make it fit a rim that's too narrow.  And yes, if the sidewall is taller and weaker as in a lower speed rated tire, the effect is exaggerated further.

In a way I really liked the way the 92 looked when it was new with the goodyear GT+4s because those tires had a square shoulder and fit nicely.  The only real complaint I had is that although wider than stock tires on a SLO Taurus, they still looked to be too narrow for the size of the car, especially in the rear.
