I'm not sure what your problem is. Have you had the
car for awhile and this problem just started?

You have an 89...The starter solenoid is mounted to
the fender. It is approx in line with the coil pack
and could be clicking if it is bad. This may very well
be your problem. I think the solenoids are pretty
cheap. I'd pick one up and see if that fixes it.

My guess is that the whining you hear is the fuel pump
spinning up or "priming". This is normal. The sound
should be most evident from the back of the car. The
pump is actually under the rear seat so this is where
you may hear a whining sound.

I have not heard of a coil pack clicking although if
there was a bad ground I guess it's possible. The coil
pack is grounded to the metal bracket that it sits on.
Is the coil pack tight? Is this bracket painted or
powdercoated? If so, you may have a ground issue.

I'm not sure what you meant when you said it sounded
like it was running on all cylinders. I'm wondering if
the plug wires are not on the coil pack in the proper
orientation. If you are using the Chilton's, they do
not have the order correct. I can't tell you what the
proper order is off of the top of my head.

Back to clicking-could be a starter/battery issue. How
old are both of them?

Check the solenoid first ...

good luck-any more questions, just respond to this
email.
