Sounds like a sticky thermostat.

A few months ago, may temp gauge on the dash would go to just about the N in
normal after just a few minutes of operation(even severe low temps, single
digits outside). Then it would drop to back down to the blue line. After
that everything operated as normal.
Yesterday though, the gauge pegged above the Red line. No heat was coming
out of the vents, I had cranked it so that if it was that hot, it may cool
it down. I didnt have far to go, opened the hood and the engine did not
seem to be hot.
On the way to work this morning, most of the way here it was pegged. About >
of the way here, it dropped into the mid normal range, and heat started
coming out of the vents. A couple more times it did go back up, but stayed
mainly in the mid normal range. When it did go up, I lost heat, but when it
came back down, heat came out.
Anyone have any ideas? Thermostat, temp sending unit? The car did not shut
down, so Im leaning towards the gauge temp sender, I HOPE!!!
