[Shotimes] Question about swapping engines

I'm of the opinion is to fix what you have since you know the complete
history of your motor. Try and get the motor fixed. If you put another
tired motor/tranny in your car you could end up with more costly problems.

To swap motor/trannys you are looking at alot of work to still have used
high mileage drivetrain.

Its like turning your underwear inside out....its still dirty.

I would pull the tranny and have it rebuilt. Inspect the clutch and put in
a new rear main seal for grins. You might have to spend some bucks but its
a sure thing rather than rolling the dice.

Subject: [Shotimes] Question about swapping engines
Date: Sun, 2 Jan 2005 11:37:17 -0500

Hey gang, I've got a couple questions I was hoping someone with SHO
experience could help me with. I've got a 94 with 190k on it. The engine
has started 'ticking' from the rear bank (can't tell if it's a slave cam
or primary) pretty good, so it's obvious I need to tear into it and fix
it. The car also has a weak 2nd gear syncro/blocking ring that shows
itself when shifting aggressively.

A buddy of mine has a 91 with 150k on it that he'll sell me for $500.00.
Both the engine and the tranny are in good shape. If I were to decide to
swap the drivetrain from the 91 into the 94, what would be the best way
to go about it? The most I've ever done on a FWD car is change out a
clutch on a 93 Cutlass Supreme. If I want to swap the drivetrain from
the 91 to the 94, would it be better/easier to do it from the bottom (as
in, dropping the subframe on each), or from the top the way we used to
do RWD cars? It seems to me that I could conceivably leave the
engine/tranny bolted to the subframe and just swap out/in the entire
assembly?

Or, would I be better off fixing the 'tick' on the 94's engine? I know
the entire maintenance history of the 94, I know next to nothing about
the 91.

All opinions welcomed and appreciated!
