Well..

Sergio was right (big surprise, yes?  ;-} ).  The gear is a lot tougher than I
though, and it is not damaged.  It is green, by the way, and has 23 teeth.

That means the problem is in the speed sensor.....somewhere between the bottom and
the top of it, there is slippage.  It definitely was not turning when I had a cable
in the top of it and was running the car in gear (in the air) a few days ago.  

The cruise works, so the slippage must be in the top half.  

I guess we should be glad the gear train for the speedo is as tough as it is....it
sure would be a hassle to have to go through this 'getting the gear out' crap all
the time....
