Well...it isn't.

So the last thing that it can be is the big gear around the differental shaft.  It
feels OK to me, testing it with as poor a reach as I have to feel it with one finger
tip.  

I'll test the whole thing from underneath after I get a new O ring to hold the green
gear into its mount.

One small little thing....it is very easy to tap the mount out of the tranny case
with the speed sensor partially screwed onto it.  The screwdriver fits under the big
nut of the VSS very easily, and there is no damage to anything when it is tapped out
with my other hand.
